There has been a growing amount of research surrounding the potential benefits offered by popular beverages such as coffee and green tea. While the two drinks could play a role in healthy aging, each choice offers its own unique advantages, and seniors deciding between the two may want to take the benefits into consideration.
For many seniors, bone strength is of the utmost importance, and experts say that green tea may be the best bet for healthy bones, according to AgingCare.com. Some of the best evidence comes from an Australian study of 275 women between 70 and 85. Researchers found that study participants who were regular tea drinkers (including green and black varieties) experienced less loss of bone density over the course of the study.
In addition to improving bone health, drinking green tea may also extend one's lifespan while serving as a substantial source of antioxidants, the website notes. Though green tea certainly offers its benefits, coffee has certain health advantages as well.
The health benefit of coffee that has attracted the most attention as of late is its potential in fighting off Alzheimer's disease. Specifically, a study of more than 120 older adults found that three cups of coffee a day was associated with a lower risk of developing dementia and slowing its progression, according to CBS News.
Much like green tea, there is more than just one benefit of coffee. The popular drink has been associated with a lower risk of stroke and could help fight off depression.
Though there are certainly advantages to drinking coffee and green tea in moderation, it's important for seniors to remember there could be drawbacks from consuming too much of the caffeinated beverages. According to the Mayo Clinic, drinking too much coffee (usually four or more a day) can cause everything from insomnia to muscle tremors.
