Charlestown’s Dorsey Center Celebrates Milestone

Rehabilitation Center Provides Ten Years of Quality Care in Residential Setting

CATONSVILLE, MD – The Dorsey Center, Charlestown Retirement Community’s short-term rehabilitation neighborhood, celebrated its tenth anniversary September 29th.

More than 40 residents of Charlestown joined staff and invited guests to commemorate ten years of providing quality care to those requiring transitional medical care and rehabilitation. Charlestown is a continuing-care retirement community that features 1,550 independent living apartment homes along with assisted living and skilled-nursing services.

Timothy Sanna, administrator of extended care at Charlestown, stated: “The Dorsey Center has been successful because of the quality of care provided by our dedicated staff and volunteer partners. Besides receiving excellent rehabilitative care, the advantage of the Dorsey Center is simple: residents can recover from medical procedures on the beautiful 110-acre campus of Charlestown, surrounded by family and friends.”

The Dorsey Center opened in April, 1999, in memory of Harry N. Dorsey who was a leader of the Health Care Residents’ Council at Charlestown.

This neighborhood at Charlestown provides a recovery center, created to provide short-term medical, post-surgical and rehabilitative care to residents as an alternative to recovering in a post-acute hospital setting or long-term care.

In a home-like environment, residents of the Dorsey Center have access to on-site physical, occupational and speech therapies, and 24-hour skilled nursing care. An interdisciplinary care plan team is dedicated to managing care according to the specific needs of the resident, and on-site geriatric board-certified physicians provide medical rounds along with nurse practitioners.

The anniversary celebration took place in the Renaissance Gardens Meeting Hall, featuring food, live entertainment and dancing. Tours of the Dorsey Center were also provided. The event was coordinated by the Renaissance Gardens admission team of Colleen Lewis, Sandra Thomas, and Samantha Copas.
