Two of Riderwood's Artists Receive Awards

Riderwood Resident Artists  Peggy Sampogna and Sylvia Valentino Receive Awards for Their Paintings Displayed at Artists Gallery in Columbia, MD SILVER SPRING, MD (August 30, 2011) - Two Riderwood retirement community residents -- Peggy Sampogna and Sylvia Valentino - have received awards for their paintings entered this month into a "Local Color" competition at the Artists Gallery in Columbia, MD. Sampogna's mixed media collage received Best in Show honors. Valentino's painting, also a collage, received a Merit Award. The Artists Gallery in Columbia is an artist-owned and operated co-operative intended to consistently show a variety of  local artists who work  in assorted fine art media. Sampogna and Valentino are participants in the Art for Artists program underway art Riderwood each Friday. They and other artists design, paint and critique each other's efforts in a cooperative venture intended to familiarize themselves with the challenges and satisfactions offered in pursuing the development of collages. These collages may combine oil, water color, pastels, and acrylic paints and even materials such as fabric or wallpaper.
