Cedar Crest Celebrates A Decade of Serving Seniors

One of Northern New Jersey's Premiere Active Adult Communities Continues its Mission of Providing Quality Care for Older Adults in A Vibrant Setting

POMPTON PLAINS, NJ - In its effort to meet the growing demand for high-quality senior housing, while providing older adults unparalleled opportunities to enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle, the Cedar Crest was developed 10 years ago in Morris County, and is now celebrating this milestone in grand fashion. Cedar Crest is the largest continuing care retirement community in the New Jersey and New York region in terms of population. Although Cedar Crest first opened its doors on August 18th, the community will be celebrating the anniversary throughout the entire month of October.  The month-long celebration will culminate with Cedar Fest at the end of the month, where residents and staff will revel in the fall season. Cedar Crest quickly became part of the township of Pompton Plains and its residents became strong proponents of volunteerism, education and are an important part of the region's economic engine. From the time that Cedar Crest residents first turned the key to open the door to their new life at the independent active adult community, to the present, approximately 2,000 residents moved in, currently enjoy their lives, thrive and contribute to the region. Cedar Crest resident Dave Way moved into the community the first week it opened.  He also served as the mayor of Pequannock in the 1960s.  He said that the community has not only grown in size, but also in opportunity for its residents. "When I first moved in, there were relatively few people here so you got to know everyone personally and developed close relationships with them.  Now that there are about 2,000 people, you just have more relationships." "There are a lot of choices for residents to participate in so many different activities here at Cedar Crest," Mr. Way said.  "There are about 180 different resident volunteer organizations that help the outside community, and these groups are always growing.  These residents participate with such gusto and that's part of what breathes life into our community." Cedar Crest also has a positive impact on the local and regional community by generating jobs and revenue within the local community. Since the community opened in 2001, through 2010, $31,302,688 in taxes have been paid to the township, with $5.6 million alone in 2010. Salaries and benefits for employees have bolstered the local economy as well.  Through 2010, $157 million have been paid to employees throughout the region. Since the community opened in 2001, Cedar Crest created 415 full-time positions and 360 part-time jobs. In addition, the community employs 317 students from local schools who work in the community's restaurants. The student employees are also eligible for the Cedar Crest Student Scholars' Fund, which provides them with funding for their secondary college or trade school education.  Year to date, approximately $750,000 has gone towards 155 scholars continuing education. The community has three large clubhouses featuring an on-site medical center, staffed by full-time doctors, three exquisite restaurants, a café and bistro, two convenience stores, two beauty parlors, two fitness centers, a swimming pool, activity rooms, classrooms, game rooms and even a bank branch. Residents also have the opportunity to take part in 182 different active clubs and activities.  The community also has its own Interfaith Chapel on campus that serves as the physical foundation for a strong faith-based community. "Cedar Crest is a place that promotes an active and healthy lifestyle for its residents and helps them live life to the fullest," said Cathy Guttman, executive director.  "For ten years this community has made a difference in the lives of residents and staff, and as we enter the decade, and beyond, we will continue our mission to improve the lives of more and more residents who are the true foundation of this wonderful place." Renaissance Gardens at Cedar Crest is the extended care neighborhood's personal care, skilled nursing and sub-acute rehabilitation home for 185 residents.  This top-notch quality personal care provides residents with an impressive staff-to-resident ratio that translates into more personalized attention for each resident in a small, homelike setting.
