Providing Comfort to Our Veterans

Eagle's Trace residents design, sew patriotic pillowcases for VA Medical Center

HOUSTON, TX---Not everyone's hobby can bring a smile to others, but a group of sewers and quilters at Eagle's Trace are seeking to do just that. The residents of the West Houston retirement community will be spreading comfort to those men and women who bravely served our country by making patriotic-themed pillowcases. And not just a few. The group plans to deliver over 150 specially-designed pillowcases to the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center of Houston during the third week of October in advance of Veterans Day. The inspiration began when a fellow resident brought a news article regarding a similar project at a children's hospital, described Eagle's Trace resident Janet Marvin, a member of the Community Outreach Committee. "It made us think about how we could share our talents," stated Ms. Marvin.  "And then we thought about the military angle.  Many of our residents are veterans, and still more have family and friends who are currently serving overseas.  It was a natural connection." In all, twenty-eight residents are involved in the project, raising over $750 for the purchase of fabric from local stores.  A smaller group of volunteers washed and ironed the fabric and then cut the patterns for the sewers. It takes approximately thirty minutes to complete each pillowcase that is typically strewn in the stars and stripes with plenty of red, white and blue. "Our volunteers are excited about the project because they can do it at their own pace, and they understand the importance of taking care of our veterans who need a helping hand," stated Ms. Marvin. Kevin Knopf, the Executive Director of Eagle's Trace, agrees.  "The Community Outreach Committee consistently coordinates programs with a special purpose and passion.  These residents have assisted people of all ages and backgrounds in the Houston region, and I'm proud that they have chosen to share their kindness with veterans who have given their all to us."
