Wind Crest Part of Record-Setting Walk to End Alzheimer's

Residents and employees walk in Denver City Park, raise over $5,000 for cause

HIGHLANDS RANCH, CO---News reports describe the 22nd Annual Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's as a record-setter, with over 8,000 participants at Denver City Park on Saturday, September 17th. Residents and staff of Wind Crest, an Erickson Living retirement community, added thirty-five walkers and runners to that total.  Along the way, they raised over $5,000 for the Alzheimer's Association, Colorado Chapter. 2011 marked the fifth consecutive year that the Wind Crest community participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer's. Tom Jones is the Corporate Director of Information Technology at Wind Crest.  As one of the community's coordinators in 2011, he noted that the Walk to End Alzheimer's is special for a number of reasons. "Wind Crest was involved with the Alzheimer's Association before our campus was officially open, making the Walk to End Alzheimer's our longest-standing volunteer tradition," noted Mr. Jones.  "Whether it's with a family member or a resident with whom we have gotten to know, many of us have personal connections that draw us to this cause.  Creating awareness and raising funds for research are two ways in which we offer support." In raising money for the event, Wind Crest held a series of "Jeans Fridays" in which employees wore jeans to work for a contribution.  Additionally, vendors and staff members donated items for a silent auction held in August, raising over $1,800. Joining Mr. Jones on the planning committee were Wind Crest employees Mary Pearson, Peter Ritchie and Meghan Saylor. For more than twenty-five years, the Alzheimer's Association Colorado Chapter has lead the fight against Alzheimer's disease and related disorders by increasing the understanding of dementia and its impact on family and community, providing information and support for those affected and promoting the advancement of research.
