Linden Ponds World War II Veteran Flies Helicopter for First Time in his Life

Hingham, MA - Russell Jalbert, who lives at Linden Ponds in Hingham, had flown 18 kinds of aircraft by the time his military career ended in 1945.  But there was one aircraft he had not flown and has always wanted to; a helicopter.   At age 93 he has finally accomplished that dream. "Flying means so much to me and I had never flown a helicopter and always wanted to," said Jalbert.  "I figured, why not now!" Jalbert, a World War II veteran, flew the helicopter at Plymouth Airport with Rick Smith, president of New England Helicopter Academy, for a two-hour flying lesson. His love of airplanes began when he heard on the radio that Charles Lindbergh had flown nonstop across the Atlantic.  The excitement of the monumental moment led him to enlist in Naval Aviation in 1941.  He was in the army until 1945 and during those years he flew 18 kinds of airplanes. Jalbert has lived at Linden Ponds for 6 years where he is publisher of the "Life at Linden Ponds" monthly newsletter.  Last year he was one of four people at Linden Ponds to receive the Spotlight Award for People Who Made an Outstanding Contribution to the Culture of the Community.  The last time he flew an airplane was 10 years ago. "I am so glad I had the opportunity to fly a helicopter," said Jalbert.  "There are a few more things I want to do in life and now I need to figure out which one I am going to accomplish next!"
