Ashby Ponds Gardeners Embark on a New Method of Gardening

(ASHBURN, VIRGINIA) - Every year in July, the Ashby Ponds Garden Club hosts an annual Garden Club Open House; this year, at the fourth annual open house, the sights will prove to be a bit unusual.  The gardens will be found in individual water troughs, 8-feet long by 3-feet wide by 2-feet tall. The Ashby Ponds community is growing and due to the expansion of the campus, the resident garden plots had to be relocated.  Their new temporary home is in one of the parking lots on campus, where one can find 45 large troughs which will eventually be home to a myriad of vegetables, herbs, and flowers.  One nice perk, according to the Ashby Ponds Garden Club president, Joan Sullivan, is that it makes gardening cleaner.  "The fact that the tubs are on asphalt keeps our shoes from getting muddy!" Another positive feature of the new garden troughs is that the Club has been able to provide gardens to more residents.  Tom Channon, the Director of General Services at the community, indicated that even more troughs have been ordered, as well.  Sullivan suggested that the waiting list for gardens is still growing partially due to the new residents in Red Robin View.  Red Robin View is a new residential building on campus that opened in April 2012 with 80 new apartment-style homes.  This building brings the total number of residents at Ashby Ponds to nearly 700. The community hopes to expand the total number of in-ground garden plots once all construction is completed, but until then, the residents seem to be enjoying the innovative troughs.  "We do appreciate all that Ashby Ponds has done to ensure that we have gardens to show off," said Sullivan.  As a resident at the community, if you're lucky, you may be able to snag some fresh, free produce.  Gardeners like to leave extra produce near the lobby for any takers during the summer!
