Wind Crest Selected to Participate in Medicare's Comprehensive Primary Care Initiative

"Philosophical match" for enhancing high quality health outcomes

HIGHLANDS RANCH, CO---Wind Crest, the Erickson Living retirement community in Douglas County, was selected by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to participate in the Comprehensive Primary Care (CPC) Initiative.   Made possible by the Affordable Care Act, the CPC Initiative is designed to help primary care practices deliver higher quality and more patient-centered care.  Medicare will work with commercial and state health insurance plans and offer bonus payments to primary care doctors who better coordinate care for their patients.    Nationwide, there are 500 primary care practices participating in the CPC initiative, 73 of which are located in Colorado.   Dr. Barbara Morris is the Medical Director at Wind Crest.  The practice handles approximately 430 office visits per month with a team of physicians who are on-call 24/7.    "The CPC Initiative is a philosophical match to our comprehensive approach to health care services," stated Dr. Morris.  "Through the Erickson Health Medical Group, Wind Crest recognizes the importance of delivering preventive care and engaging our residents and their caregivers.  The additional resources from Medicare will foster enhanced innovation and quality outcomes."   Practices were selected through a competitive application process based on their use of health information technology, ability to demonstrate recognition of advanced primary care by accreditation bodies, service to patients covered by participating payers, participation in practice transformation and diversity of geography, practice size and ownership structure.   Primary care is critical to promoting health, improving care and reducing overall system costs, but has been historically under-funded in the United States.  CMS intends to invest up to $1 billion to help drive the CPI Initiative, which it projects will save Medicare $50 billion over ten years.   "The CPC Initiative will allow us to develop an even stronger care management model for the medical practice at Wind Crest," stated Craig Erickson, the retirement community's Executive Director.  "We are pleased that our utilization of electronic health records was an important factor in being selected by CMS.  The more precise measuring of quality outcomes in categories such as flu vaccinations and disease management will provide industry-leading health care delivery to our residents." As part of its overall health and wellness program, Wind Crest also features a fitness and aquatics center as well as trained EMT personnel on-staff.  Under construction is a continuum of care neighborhood of 128 residences offering assisted living, memory care, post-acute rehabilitation and long-term nursing care services.
