Catholic Residents at Greenspring Will Donate 600 Books to Local Elementary School Children

Residents at Greenspring retirement community will present donations and read to students at Crestwood Elementary School for Read Across America Day

(Springfield, Va.) - About 400 residents at Greenspring retirement community in Springfield, Va. identify themselves as Catholics.  Over the past year, the Catholic residents have been raising money to provide books to students at a nearby elementary school.  The residents have worked in partnership with Scholastic to ensure that the students at Crestwood Elementary School will be able to have appropriate grade-level books that they can call their own.  The Greenspring residents will present the donations at the school on March 1, 2013, which is the National Education Association's Read Across America Day. Residents Steve Kirby and Paul Quinn, the chair and deputy chair respectively of the Catholic Council at Greenspring, were integral in the development of the program.  "The residents have been extremely generous," said Quinn, who indicated that $2400 was raised for this initiative.  He hopes that more book donations can be made again in the fall.  "Book ownership helps to generate further interest in reading," said Kirby.  "I feel it is very important to help these young people become educated and responsible contributors to our society." Crestwood Elementary School is made up of about 600 students in Kindergarten through sixth grades.  On March 1, Greenspring residents will help the students to celebrate Read Across America Day by reading books to the Kindergarten through second grade classes at Crestwood Elementary School.   About Greenspring: Greenspring is situated on a scenic 108-acre campus in Springfield, Virginia.  The community is home to nearly 2000 residents, many of which reside in the 1404 independent living apartment-style homes.  At Greenspring, over 200 resident-run and resident-driven programs promote an engaged, fulfilling lifestyle that is reflected in resident satisfaction levels that exceed the industry average.  Life at Greenspring offers a true sense of community and is an exciting alternative to the typical retirement community.  Additional information about Greenspring can be found at www.ericksonliving.com.
