World's oldest Facebook user an example of healthy aging

With an estimated 1 billion active users, it's fair to say Facebook has become a staple for people from all walks of life, but Edythe Kirchmaier stands out from the crowd. At 105, Kirchmaier is the website's oldest registered user, beating the next oldest member by four years, reports the New York Daily News.

Kirchmaier is active on more than just the popular social network. A paragon of healthy aging, she is also the oldest registered driver in California and is up on the latest technology, even receiving an iPad mini for Christmas. She is also very involved in the volunteer community by donating her time to Direct Relief International, something she has done for more than four decades.

"She's always on the go and has a lot of very close friends and very close family," Kerri Murray, who works for Direct Relief International, told the newspaper.

Kirchmaier is indicative of the growing likelihood of seniors adapting the latest technological advances. A recent Pew Research survey found that around 17 percent of adults between the ages of 66 and 74 use tablets like the iPad. Additionally, about 24 percent of the same age group is on a social media site.
