Greenspring Named a 2013 "Best Nursing Home" by U.S. News & World Report

(Springfield, Va.) - U.S. News & World Report recently released its fifth annual Best Nursing Homes ratings and has named Greenspring a "Best Nursing Home" for 2013.  To determine the 2013 ratings, U.S. News & World Report utilized data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS); the "Best Nursing Home" designation was given to nursing homes that recently received an overall five-star rating from CMS.  In August 2012, the continuing care neighborhood at Greenspring retirement community received a five-star rating in the "Overall Quality" category, which is the highest possible score in the Five-Star Quality Rating System administered by CMS.  "We are so pleased to have received this designation from U.S. News & World Report," said Karen Boyce, director of continuing care at Greenspring. "We strive each and every day to provide person-centered and supportive care to the residents who call Greenspring home.  This rating further demonstrates our dedication to providing the highest quality of care," said Boyce.  According to the CMS website, the Five-Star Quality Rating System was created to help consumers, their families, and caregivers make an informed comparison among the nation's 17,000 nursing homes that are certified by Medicare or Medicaid.  U.S. News & World Report recently produced a video on how to choose a nursing home and offered some advice to those seeking help: visit homes at different times and on different days of the week to make sure residents are occupied throughout the day; look for signs that staff has a close relationship with residents, such as calling them by name and making sure they eat; ask to see inspection reports, then ask how any safety or health problems were resolved; and review hidden costs, such as physical therapy or dentist appointments.
