Continuing Care Neighborhood at Riderwood Earns 5-Star Rating from Federal Agency

SILVER SPRING, MD---The Continuing Care Neighborhood at Riderwood retirement community attained the maximum score in the four signature categories of the Five-Star Quality Rating System administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The Erickson Living community earned a 5-star rating in the Overall, Health Inspection, Staffing and Quality Measure categories, updated in May, 2013.  It is the sixth consecutive year that Riderwood has been rated 5-star overall. CMS created the Five-Star Quality Rating System to assist consumers, their families and caregivers to compare the nation's 17,000 nursing homes that are certified by Medicare or Medicaid.  The quality system assigns each nursing home a ranking of 1 through 5 stars, with a 5-star rating indicating a "much above average quality" level of care. Lori Hamilton is the Director of Extended Care at Riderwood.  "We take great pride in the fact that Riderwood is one of only eight skilled nursing facilities in Maryland to earn a 5-star rating in each assessment area," stated Ms. Hamilton.  "It is a tribute to the professionalism and compassion of our employees who care for our residents each and every day." The CMS system provides a "better understanding of how we are regulated and judged in the quality of service provided to our residents, and the rankings are an important tool for families and caregivers," noted Ms. Hamilton. Three sub-categories determine the Overall score: (1) Health Inspections: rating with information from the last three years of on-site inspections, (2) Staffing: rating with information about the number of hours of care on average to each resident each day by nursing staff, and (3) Quality Measures: rating with information on eighteen physical and clinical measures for resident needs. Riderwood provides a full continuum of care, featuring 1,119 residences in independent living that offer a variety of one and two bedroom floor plans and pricing options.  The Continuing Care neighborhood offers skilled nursing, assisted living, post-acute rehabilitation and memory-care services.
