Riderwood Hosts Washington NBC4 Anchor Angie Goff to Discuss Technology's Impact on the News

SILVER SPRING, MD---According to the Pew Research Center, nearly 40% of Americans own a tablet computer, and nearly half possess a smart phone, with these percentages growing yearly. As the delivery of the news continues to evolve due to technology, so too are the opportunities for consumers to contribute to the conversation. That was the message of WRC-TV NBC News 4 anchor and reporter Angie Goff, who was the feature guest of Riderwood on February 26th.  Over sixty-five residents of the Erickson Living retirement community attended the Social Media Series event in Maryland Hall. "For most of us, reading the newspaper and watching the evening news are daily mainstays.  However, in the past five years, the way we receive news has changed dramatically.  From the launch of news websites to the proliferation of iPhones and tablets to the explosion of Facebook and Twitter, we've become a true 24-7 news society," stated Jeff Getek, public affairs manager for Riderwood. "This dynamic impacts people of all ages, and that is why Riderwood was so pleased to host Ms. Goff as she presented us with an accomplished insider's view of the digital newsroom," said Mr. Getek. During her presentation, Ms. Goff played news clips and video from social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Vine as well as the NBC4 News website.  She then addressed questions from attendees on topics such as internet security, how to get started with social media and journalistic ethics in the social media realm. As a result, the resident-led Riderwood Computer Club is planning a social media "start-up" session later in the spring. Prior to joining NBC4, Ms. Goff spent several years as a multi-media journalist at WUSA in Washington.  She also anchored and reported for WIS-TV in Columbia, South Carolina, where she won an Emmy Award.  [caption id="attachment_105095" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Angie Goff, anchor and reporter with WRC-TV NBC4 in Washington, provided insight into the new media landscape with residents of Riderwood, the Erickson Living retirement community in Silver Spring.
