Ann's Choice Goes New Orleans As Pancake Flipping Contest Brings a Taste of Fat Tuesday to Seniors

WARMINSTER, PA - Laissez les bons temps rouler! - "Let the good times roll!" A bit of the Big Easy was bountiful at Ann's Choice as residents celebrated Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday in grand fashion with a little competition to also honor National Pancake Day. Revelers moved to the sounds of traditional Mardi Gras Zydeco music as they watched about 10 participants take part in the First Annual Musical Pancake Competition. Ever heard of the children's game musical chairs? The premise of this original contest was that the residents gathered in a circle holding skillets as one pancake was flipped from pan to pan while traditional Mardi Gras Zydeco music was played.  When the music stopped, the participant with the pancake in their pan was out! This occurred until one lucky winner was left and the victor Mardi Gras Queen was Phyllis Leonard, edging out fellow resident Russ Neiger. The third place finisher was Ginny Reaske. The three finishers received gift cards for their efforts. "We wanted to bring a little of the Big Easy and Bourbon Street here to Ann's Choice to celebrate Mardi Gras, pancakes and lots of fun," Ann's Choice Executive Director Chris Donati said. "This unique event was a tremendous amount of pure excitement that culminated with a challenging contest to see who was the fastest pancake flipper." "We have so many different events here at the community and this is by far one of the more different ones we've ever tried," said Pete Cataldi, Ann's Choice director of resident life. "Our aim here is to provide as many interesting and entertaining opportunities for our residents to enjoy themselves and the pancake contest was surely one that pleased." Ann's Choice Director of Dining Services Chris Babst said, "We began the day with a traditional Pancake Breakfast which was very well-received by the residents. It was really entertaining to have a different contest like this to follow and stick with the pancake theme. I think everyone enjoyed themselves." The term Mardi Gras, which is French for Fat Tuesday, refers to the event of the Carnival celebration beginning on, or after, the Epiphany and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. Many Christian cultures use this night of revelry as the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual of fasting for the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday. The event was hosted by Dave Rector, Ann's Choice's very own community television coordinator, who provided the crowd pancake trivia and spoke about the history of Mardi Gras.
