Tallgrass Creek Residents to Spit Watermelon Seeds in July 15 Contest

WHAT: A Tuesday, July 15, free-style Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest by Overland Park, KS, retirees during Tallgrass Creek retirement community's Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest. The event, which will begin at 10:45 a.m. immediately following a summer Watermelon Social, will showcase spitting techniques that promise to be the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. PARTICULARS: Scores of residents will spit seeds on an officially-designated watermelon seed spitting course (actually the sidewalk next to the pool) on the Terrace outside the Tallgrass Creek Marketplace. Wellness Coordinator Amy Stewart and Community Resources Lead Coordinator Jennifer Gray will measure the distances of seeds spit by each contestant. The winner will be the person who spits his or her watermelon seeds the farthest distances. Rumor has it that a soon-to-be collector's item Watermelon Trophy will be presented to the winner, along with bragging rights of being the "Best Watermelon Seed Spitter West of the Mississippi River." WHEN/WHERE: Tuesday, July 15, from 10:45 a.m. - 11 a.m., at Tallgrass Creek, 13800 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, KS. WHY A WATERMELON SEED SPITTING CONTEST? The Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest is said to be a good event for Tallgrass Creek residents because many of them have fond memories of summertime outings when they ate watermelons and enjoyed the company of their families and friends. "What do you do with the seeds when you eat your watermelon?" said Gray. "You spit them out, so why not make a game out of it?"
