“Puttin’ on the Glitz” Fashion Show Kicks Off Scholars’ Fund Campaign Benefiting Local Students

Local retailers lend a hand in helping to raise funds for student employee scholarships

Resident Bernita Taylor, one of the directors of the fashion show, and Sarah Ansari, a 2015 Scholar Candidate(Ashburn, Va.) - On March 30, Ashby Ponds retirement community hosted a room full of more than 200 residents and guests for the 2015 “Puttin’ on the Glitz” Fashion Show benefiting the community’s Scholars’ Fund.  The Scholars’ Fund provides recipients with scholarships toward higher education; since the program’s establishment in 2010, nearly 60 students have received scholarships.  The fashion show featured 12 couples dressed to the nines thanks to the event’s local retail sponsors; each couple included a 2015 student scholarship candidate and an Ashby Ponds resident.

Scholarships are provided to students who work for the community's dining services department in a variety of capacities including as servers, restaurant assistants, utility workers, and service coaches.  If they satisfy a number of requirements, the students receive up to $4000 (or up to $500 per semester) in scholarships paid directly to the college or trade school of the student's choice.  Last year alone, the community raised over $65,000 and provided scholarships to 17 area high school and college student employees.  This year, the community expects that approximately 20 candidates will be eligible for scholarships.

The fashion show’s attire and accessory sponsors included Lord & Taylor, Jos. A. Bank, and Ketterman’s Jewelers.  Ketterman’s also hosted a trunk show at Ashby Ponds during the event; part of the show’s proceeds benefited the Scholars’ Fund.  The Scholars’ Fund campaign will host two other annual events during April including the Duck Derby at the Ashby Ponds indoor pool on April 16 and the community car wash on April 25.  Scholarship candidates will be honored at an awards ceremony on July 19.
