Greenspring Honors Flag Day

(Springfield, Va.) - On Sunday, June 14, Greenspring retirement community was host to a Flag Day commemoration ceremony, “Salute to the Flag,” featuring special guests and patriotic song. Flag Day is celebrated annually to mark the adoption of the country’s flag by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777.  In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing June 14 as Flag Day.

Greenspring’s own American Legion Post 123 started the ceremony with a presentation of the colors, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by CDR Phil Case, U.S. Navy (ret.). BGen. Bill Weise, U.S. Marine Corps (ret.) then presented a certificate and a flag once flown over the U.S. Capitol to Greenspring’s Executive Director, Ben Cornthwaite. Attendees of the event were also treated to selection of patriotic music by the community’s Chorister’s choral group.

Also in attendance at the event was Virginia’s Attorney General Mark Herring, who presented the keynote speech at the ceremony.

“To all those with us today who fought under the banner of our nation, I thank you for your service and for being with us here today,” said General Herring.  “The flag of our nation is one of those precious unifying symbols; no matter your age, religion, color, or creed, all Americans understand what our flag means.  Around the world, our flag represents the values we all share, the freedoms that we all cherish.  That’s why every June 14th for nearly a century, we have taken a moment as a nation to pause and to reflect on those values and those principles.”

The event concluded with a rendition of Johnny’s Cash’s “Ragged Old Flag” by Greenspring’s Troubadour, Col. Gray Parks, U.S. Army (ret.), who noted that June 14 also marked the 240th birthday of the U.S. Army.

“Salute to the Flag” was sponsored by the Greenspring Democratic Club.
