Oak Crest Residents Help Dollars Stretch for Military Families

Parkville, MD--The average family of four living in America spends roughly between $130 and $297 each week on groceries, according to a March 2015 report issued by the United States Department of Agriculture.
For military families serving overseas, though, the expense can be greater because of currency exchange rates.
Residents of Oak Crest retirement community found a simple way to help.
They are participating in a Support Our Troops signature project called Troopons®.  The program aims to collect manufacturer coupons, both active and expired (up to two months), for food, non-food, baby and pet manufacturer products to help overseas and domestic military families save money.  Support Our Troops is a 501 (c)(3) charity.
The effort is part of the Volunteer Program coordinated by Oak Crest employee Ann Marie Riehl.  “Military families sacrifice so much for all of us,” said Mrs. Riehl whose brother served overseas in the U.S. Army.  “Our time spent clipping and sorting coupons is a just a small way to show our appreciation and how much we care.”
She learned of the idea from, Greenspring, an Erickson community located in Virginia.  The group sends an average of 500 coupons each month to Support Our Troops, a number Mrs. Riehl hopes will increase exponentially.
There are approximately 140 retired veterans residing at Oak Crest so the project is a natural fit for the Erickson Living community.
Oak Crest resident Richard Albright, a World War II veteran, and his wife Josie are part of the coupon clipping group. “It’s an easy way to do something to support our troops,” said Mr. Albright.  “Who doesn’t love to save money? We hope others will join us.”
