For the Love of Bocce at Highland Springs

DALLAS, TX—For the residents and employees of Highland Springs, a little friendly competition is a way of life.

Whether putting on the golf green located in the heart of the 89-acre campus or tossing horseshoes or shooting 9-ball billiards, recreational activities are a fun source of camaraderie.

The Erickson Living retirement community continued the tradition this summer with a new game: bocce.  Six teams consisting of one resident and one staff member took to a makeshift court for a morning tournament in June.  The tourney was an extension of the regular games—growing in popularity—that are played each Wednesday and open to all residents.

Carefully reading the “break” of the court and exhibiting pinpoint accuracy throughout their matches, the team of Bob Derryberry (resident) and Matt Neville (Executive Director) emerged victorious.

Barbara Blachly, Community Resources Coordinator at Highland Springs, noted the value of fun pursuits that either pair—or pit—residents and employees.

“These events serve to build common ground between the generations,” said Ms. Blachly.  “Our employees enjoy spending time with residents in a casual atmosphere, and in turn, our residents take pride in doing their best, and often winning these competitions.  All said, it’s one small way in which we create a family atmosphere at Highland Springs.”
