“Jelly Fish” of HR Department Light Up Oak Crest…& Then Social Media

Parkville, MD—Each year, millions of Americans try to create the “perfect” Halloween costume.

The Human Resources Department of Oak Crest was no exception, as they prepared to enter the annual Halloween Costume Contest held at the Erickson Living retirement community on October 30.

According to Wendy Kelly, Director of Human Resources, a simple idea that she found on the social media site, Pinterest, was the inspiration for the “jelly fish” of Oak Crest HR.

Their colorful costumes—consisting of uniquely decorated umbrellas--earned them the top prize in the employee division of the contest, joining Evelyn McGreal (first prize, resident division) as the first place champions of 2015.

Along with Wendy, the “jelly fish” of Oak Crest HR included Steve Arthur, Theresa Hall, Kelly Hamilton, Karen Jarrell, Laney Lamb, Kenae Moore, Mariann Richardson, Estella Sullivan and Julie Wheeler.

A few hours after the contest, the photo-sharing site of USA Today, Your Take, would re-tweet the photo to its 24,000+ followers on Twitter.  Later that afternoon, USA Today would “favorite” the photo for its 1.8 million followers to see and enjoy.

The experience led Gary Hibbs, Executive Director of Oak Crest, to comment that “this is real, authentic engagement beyond just words.  Thanks to all on our HR Team, and congrats for creatively leading (and winning) with the jelly fish costumes!  Your team led in BOTH word and deed even when the ‘urgent’ continues to press on us all.”
