(Ashburn, Va.) - As professional tennis players around the world vied for their spot in history at the U.S Open, a group of seniors competed locally for another tournament's top spot.
On September 9th, the Ashby Ponds resident tennis group made the trip from Ashburn, Va. to Silver Spring, Md. for the annual Erickson Living tennis tournament; the tournament was hosted by Riderwood, Ashby Ponds' sister community. Residents from Charlestown, another Erickson Living community located in Catonsville, Md., also competed in the tournament.
Residents from the three retirement communities competed in five different events; women's singles, men's singles, women's doubles, men's doubles, and mixed doubles. At the end of the tournament, the Ashby Ponds tennis group came out on top as victors in all but one event.
Ashby Ponds residents Bob and Ans Olander won the final mixed doubles event against Riderwood. Having been playing together for nearly 40 years, the duo is an experienced force on the tennis court.
"We've played nearly everywhere we've traveled no matter the conditions," said Ans. The Olanders can be found honing their tennis skills nearly every morning at the Ashburn Village courts just down the road from Ashby Ponds. The door of their apartment home, which is adorned with two tennis racquets, now showcases their tournament plaque.
Ashby Ponds residents also were victorious in women's singles (Trish Ward), women's doubles (Jean Schloegel and Carole Brown), and men's singles (Gary Heinberg).
The Ashby Ponds tennis group has been competing in the tournament at Riderwood for six years.
