WHAT: Congressman Frank Wolf and Supervisor Lori Waters will join Ashby Ponds residents in dedicating a monument commemorating the years of service by veterans at the community.

On September 29, 1789, the U.S. Congress passed the act which established the first, regular U.S. military.
BACKGROUND: The monument will include the crests of each military service (from left to right - US Army, US Marine Corps, US Navy, US Air Force, US Coast Guard) and the words "Dedicated to Ashby Ponds Veterans Who Served and Defended Our Freedom" along with "Lest We Forget". The residents raised money within the community for the monument and are very proud of their service and this representative monument.
Ashby Ponds retirement community is home to 600 residents; almost one-quarter of them are veterans of one of the branches of the military. At last count, there are 145 veterans at Ashby Ponds who have given more than a combined 1485 years of service:
54 U.S. Army Vets
41 U.S. Navy Vets
34 U.S. Air Force Vets
15 U.S. Marine Corps Vets
1 U.S. Coast Guard Vet
Some of these veterans include:
Resident Benjamin Givens who is a four-generation war vet; his great grandfather fought in the Civil War, his grandfather in the Spanish-American War, his father in World War I, and Benjamin in World War II.
Resident Wilbur "Bill" Sharpe who was a prisoner of war (February 14, 1943-April 9, 1945) while serving the U.S. Army.
Resident Frank Thomas who has coordinated veteran's events and memorials at Ashby Ponds for several years; he is a Marine Corps vet.
