(Ashburn, VA) – Ashby Ponds retirement community recently hosted their 7th Annual Summer Olympics in Ashburn, Va. Since 2009, residents of the community have come together each summer to participate in a variety of sporting events vying for gold, silver, and bronze medals. More than 215 residents competed in this year's competition, with many participating and medaling in multiple events.
"We encourage everyone to come out, have fun, meet new friends, and be a part of a team, regardless of their fitness level," said Gina Muaau, Wellness Coordinator at Ashby Ponds.
The Olympic events, which spanned over a course of seven days, included bocce, putting golf, seated balloon volleyball, cornhole, billiards, Wii bowling, Frisbee toss, sponge relay, ping pong, walk relay, run/walk relay, water volleyball, and the one-mile run, a new event this year. Eight residents participated in the inaugural one-mile run event, with the fastest competitor crossing the finish line at 10:09.
Sponsors in the greater community help to make the Olympics possible at Ashby Ponds. This year, Gold sponsors included Hearing Associates of Northern Virginia, LLC, Stay at Home Care, The Medical Team, Moon River Senior Care and Transportation, Cypress Contracting, LLC, and Capital Home Health Care, Inc. The closing ceremonies and medal presentations for the 2015 Ashby Ponds Summer Olympics were held on Wednesday, August 19th.
