True Value at Avery Point

Benefits of a continuing care retirement community

When it comes to retirement living, options are endless. Continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) offer various levels of living, all in one place, making them a popular choice for retirees everywhere.

From independent living to assisted living and nursing, respite, and memory care, a CCRC gives people the assurance that they'll only have to move once should their health needs change—unlike a single-family house, townhome, or 55-plus community where continuing care isn't available.

Amenities to motivate you

Most CCRCs offer the active, independent lifestyle people become accustomed to in a house, with added benefits like 24-hour security and on-site health care. They also have activities like continuing education, peer-led clubs, hobbies, fitness, and travel opportunities. And the best part is, it's all close to home.

Living options at CCRCs vary. Some have apartment homes, some have cottages, and some have a combination of both.

When it comes to amenities, offerings can vary and can make some CCRCs stand out amongst the rest. Avery Point, the Erickson Senior Living community being built in Richmond, Va., will offer a wealth of amenities and services so that community members can fill their calendars with friends and events, not errands and chores.

CCRCs focus on providing the right level of care for each individual. All Erickson Living-managed communities, like Avery Point, emphasize prevention and are designed to help keep residents healthy and active in mind, body, and spirit. With daily group fitness classes and a fitness center and indoor swimming pool on site, it's easy to be active—while a medical center is available for doctors' appointments.

"Even if you choose to stay with your current doctor, you can still visit the medical center for flu shots, lab work, and checkups," says Jeff Watson, Erickson's director of operations. "We take Medicare and many other insurance plans."

Activities to inspire you

Physical fitness isn't the only way to stay healthy. Many CCRCs offer current events discussion groups, continuing education classes, music groups, and seminars on any number of topics, giving community members myriad opportunities to exercise their minds.

Finally, what's healthy living without healthy eating? Though not all CCRCs emphasize their dining experience, one industry leader has made it a goal to serve fresh, healthy, seasonal foods prepared by highly trained and talented chefs.

"Erickson is changing the way this industry does dining," says Watson.

Each dining venue at Avery Point will be designed to create a unique ambience. Chefs prepare a variety of fresh menu items—from familiar favorites to regional specialties—executed at the moment of service and served to each diner's specifications.

"We believe your dining experience should be one of the most enjoyable parts of your day," says Watson. "That's why we hold a commitment to serving fresh, cooked-to-order dishes, just like you'd find in a typical restaurant."

Additional care to comfort you

While CCRCs emphasize preventive care for those in independent living, many also provide additional care for those who need it. On-site assisted living at a continuing care neighborhood gives extra assistance with day-to-day tasks for people who are in generally good health but need a helping hand.

Avery Point's continuing care neighborhood will provide access to higher levels of care, including assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory care if needed.

Jim Antonakos, sales director for Avery Point, reports that the first phase of independent living apartments will open in early 2021, with the second phase and continuing care to open about one year later.

"We are right on schedule with reservations," he says. "The response has been overwhelmingly positive."

Antonakos notes one difference that sets Avery Point apart from its local competitors—its financial structure. As a fee-for-service, or Type C contract, Avery Point residents only pay for the services they need when they need them. On the contrary, residents at life care communities pay for services regardless of whether they need the additional care or not.

"The true value of a CCRC like Avery Point is in the peace of mind you have in knowing that even if you may never need continuing care, it's a comfort to know it's available," Watson says. "Meanwhile, you have exciting amenities; a vibrant community of peers; and a beautiful, maintenance-free home to enjoy your retirement."
