Charlestown's Gene Gilhooly Races Horses and Can't Wait for This Year's Preakness Stakes

CATONSVILLE, MD (April 20, 2017) – Charlestown retirement community resident Gene Gilhooly cannot do anything else on May 20 but attend this year’s 142 nd running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore City. Horse racing, it seems, is in his blood.

A former elementary school principal, Gene bought his first racehorse in 1984. He today operates Schoolyard Stables where he buys, sells, and races horses in claiming races.

UMBC Undergraduate Students Tour Charlestown and Learn About Career Options

CATONSVILLE, MD (April 11, 2017) – Undergraduate students from UMBC toured Charlestown as part of their university’s weeklong “Fields of Opportunity, Careers in Aging” focus. One of the goals was to get them to consider career options at the retirement community.

Nearly 300 Guests are "All In" at Charlestown Home Expo

CATONSVILLE, MD (March 18, 2017) -- A total of 277 guests attended a St. Patrick's Day Home Expo held at Charlestown, with 15 of them becoming new Priority List members who expressed an interest in calling the retirement community their future home.

Fourteen made formal requests for follow-up appointments and two apartment homes were reserved on the spot.

As a result, Charlestown today has just 7 of its 1,459 apartment homes not spoken for.

After the 2015 riots in Baltimore City, Charlestown volunteers came together to donate their time and talents through projects designed to renew and revitalize the Sandtown-Winchester community. They call themselves the Charlestown-Sandtown Connection.

CATONSVILLE, MD (March 8, 2017) -- Thirty Charlestown residents -- among them a former teacher, college dean, journalist, engineer, accountant, housewife, and spy -- get together each Friday morning for a few hours in the retirement community's newly-refurbished art studio. Dramatic Play at Charlestown on March 10 and March 11 Examines Women's Secrets Revealed at High School Reunion

CATONSVILLE, MD (March 2, 2017) – “Martha’s Party,” a two-act drama about secrets revealed by women at their high school reunion, will be performed Friday, March 10, and Saturday, March 11 (beginning at 7 p.m.) in the auditorium of Charlestown retirement community.

The play follows five cheerleader-wannabe friends from Wooster High School (class of 1938) who meet 62 years later at the Plaza Hotel in New York for a reunion. Their conversations unexpectedly lay bare the joy and heartbreak each have experienced in their lives.

CATONSVILLE, MD (March 1, 2017) – Winter Putterland, a series of indoor miniature gol f events held last week, raised a total of $8,900 for Charlestown retirement community’s Benevolent Care Fund. This fund helps residents who experience an unforeseen change in their financial situation for reasons beyond their control.

CATONSVILLE, MD (March 1, 2017) – Charlestown retirement community resident Stephen Schimpff, MD, has published “Fortune Seekers in the Promised Land: A Tale of Exploitation and Development in the Canaan Valley and Blackwater Region in West Virginia." This historical story follows the transformation of the area from pristine plateau to pillaged woodland to wildlife preserve to tourist destination.
