Diversity & Inclusion Council hosts inspiring event
Catonsville, Md. -- Last week, Charlestown, a senior living community managed by Erickson Living, held a celebration honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
On Friday, January 24, 2020, a sizable crowd of Charlestown residents, staff and guests gathered together in the community's on-campus Auditorium to remember and reflect on Dr. King's message of freedom, equality, justice and love.
The event was hosted by Charlestown's Diversity & Inclusion Council, a team dedicated to celebrating diversity and creating a more inclusive community that respects and appreciates individual differences.
The theme of the event, "The Man, The Movement, and The Message", was woven throughout the program with speech, video and music. Guest Speaker Gregory Johnson, Assistant General Manager at Charlestown's Chesapeake Dining Room, delivered a dynamic, energizing sermon.
Diara Thompson, a server at the Chesapeake, shared her gift of song with the community by performing a beautiful rendition of "Rise Up," and leading the crowd in singing "Lift Every Voice and Sing" to conclude the inspiring program.
"Charlestown's Diversity & Inclusion Council was proud to host this event," said Lateshia Griggs, Human Resources Recruiter at Charlestown and member of the Council. "This was our first event of the year and we feel it was fitting to kick off our programming with a tribute to Dr. King's important work."
Charlestown's Diversity & Inclusion Council endorses a broad definition of diversity, and seeks to provide programs and resources that enhance knowledge, encourage understanding and increase inclusion. The Council is comprised of both staff and resident members, meeting monthly to brainstorm ideas and plan educational and entertaining activities around diversity and inclusion for the Charlestown community.
