Devonshire Community Member Bringing Others Together at Weekly Tai Chi Workshop

Palm Beach Gardens, FL -- Devonshire Community Member Artie Lynnworth and his wife Margy tried a Tai Chi class years ago at their local YMCA.  Now, 11 years later, he is teaching a weekly Tai Chi workshop at Devonshire at PGA National, an Erickson Living managed retirement community in Palm Beach Gardens, FL., and community members are loving it!

"Our first workshop at Devonshire had 58 people attend and many had never tried Tai Chi before," said Lynnworth.  "We offer workshops once a week on Saturdays for an hour to Devonshire community members and it's been great to watch people try Tai Chi for the first time. "

Lynnworth started practicing Tai Chi when he was looking for an Aikido martial arts dojo to continue with his martial arts training.  He discovered his local YMCA offered Aikido and Tai Chi. Together, Lynnworth and his wife Margy tried some Tai Chi classes and quickly realized not only did they enjoy the Tai Chi, but it reinforced techniques for Lynnworth's martial arts training.

"Many people don't realize that Tai Chi is a very slow motion practice of martial arts positions, such as deflections, defense and attack movements," said Lynnworth.  "In addition, as I've come to learn, Tai Chi also helps with memory (learning the various forms and sequences), balance (much of Tai Chi is the slow shifting of weight and moving at times on one leg), deep breathing and what is referred to as a moving meditation. It's been great to see community members learning new skills, getting better at balance, and showing improved form as they learn the movements." 

Currently, Lynnworth is teaching a 6- week session at Devonshire.  More workshops are being planned for October.
