Senior living community recognized by Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce

Greenspring, a senior living community developed and managed by Erickson Living, has been awarded the Corporate Citizen of the Year Award by the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce.

Presented during the Chamber's Annual Dinner on December 5, 2019, the award honors a company who demonstrates strong involvement to better the quality of life in the Greater Springfield area.

"Greenspring was chosen as 2019's Corporate Citizen of the Year for its ongoing commitment to meeting the growing need for dynamic senior living in Northern Virginia," said Kim Clarke, President and CEO at the Chamber.

Since welcoming its first residents in 1998, Greenspring has established itself as a leader in retirement living and integrated senior health and wellness. As Springfield's premier continuing care retirement community, Greenspring offers maintenance-free living in all of the community's spacious apartment homes. Residents enjoy a vibrant, active lifestyle thanks to all of the exciting on-campus amenities and services, including a five restaurants, medical center, 24-hour security, fitness center, pool, art studios, and much more.

"In addition to caring for our local seniors, Greenspring provides opportunities for area individuals living with disabilities to find independence through supported employment and skills training," Clarke continued.

For more than 13 years, Greenspring has partnered with MVLE, a Springfield-based not-for-profit organization that works to employ and support individuals with disabilities throughout Northern Virginia. Greenspring is one of MVLE's longest-standing employment partners, having provided meaningful employment to more than 32 MVLE individuals. Today, 12 MVLE members work in various functions across Greenspring's 58-acre community.

Last year, Jennifer Mitchell, a MVLE member who has been working at Greenspring for 16 years, earned a gold medal for swimming in the Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi. She credits her work with MVLE and Greenspring for helping her find success and never allowing her intellectual disability to define her.

The partnership between Greenspring and MVLE goes beyond employment to include financial support and volunteer resources, as well. Both Greenspring staff and residents are actively engaged with MVLE programming throughout the year, from serving as corporate sponsor for the organization's annual golf tournament to helping to develop the new Culinary Arts Training Program, and more.

"At Greenspring, our mission is to share our gifts to create communities that celebrate life. In particular, we are focused on cultivating opportunities for those who may be more vulnerable, including seniors, youth and the differently-abled," said Chandra Kumar, Executive Director at Greenspring. "To be recognized as this year's Corporate Citizen of the Year, helping to better the quality of life in the Greater Springfield area is a great honor that we accept with pride. We look forward to continuing to contribute to this community and supporting the Chamber in its important work."
