Two Greenspring Residents, Japanese-American World War II Veterans, Receive Congress' Highest Civilian Honor

George Nakamura and Yukio Kawamoto recently honored with Congressional Gold Medals  (SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA) - In early November, Congress awarded Congressional Gold Medals to Japanese-American veterans who served in the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and the Military Intelligence Service.  Greenspring residents, George Nakamura and Yukio Kawamoto, are two of the hundreds of veterans who attended the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony on November 2, 2011.  Both Nakamura and Kawamoto are "Nisei" or second-generation Japanese-Americans who served as part of the Military Intelligence Service during World War II, which was responsible for performing intelligence work against the Japanese military. With the 70th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attacks fast approaching, Greenspring retirement community remembers as resident survivors who were at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 share their stories.
