39 student employees receive college scholarships at Annual Scholars' Ceremony

Springfield, Va. – July 9, 2019 – Greenspring, a continuing care retirement community developed and managed by Erickson Living, recently award 39 of its student employees with the Greenspring Scholarship Award. A special ceremony was held at the community on May 20 to recognize and celebrate the Scholars' achievements.

The Greenspring Scholarship Award provides recipients with $10,000 to help offset academic tuition expenses at their college or university, paid directly to the school over four years.

To be eligible for the Greenspring Scholarship Award, student employees must work at least 1,000 hours at Greenspring, achieve at least a 2.75 cumulative grade point average, earn a recommendation from their Greenspring Supervisor or Director, provide a letter of reference from a teacher or guidance counselor, and complete a panel review with the Resident Philanthropy Committee.

The Greenspring Scholarship was first awarded to the Class of 2000. Since then, residents have donated more than $2.4 million through the Annual Scholarship Campaign and funded 430 scholarships to university, community college and trade school.

This year, more than 875 donors contributed to the campaign for a total of more than $248,000.

"We are grateful to each of our residents who made a donation to the Annual Scholars' Campaign, without whom we would not be able to offer this opportunity to the student employees who work so hard for this community. For some, this scholarship makes the difference in a student's ability to afford to go to college and continue their education," said Kimberly Nelson, Director of Philanthropy. "My deepest thanks to the Resident Philanthropy Committee for their work in making this program such a success."

Greenspring Scholars will continue their educations at institutions such as Northern Virginia Community College, Shenandoah University, and George Mason University.
