(Springfield, Va.) - On September 19th, the Washington Business Journal hosted an awards luncheon event to recognize Greater Washington's Healthiest Employers for 2013. Greenspring, an Erickson Living retirement community in Springfield, Va., was ranked first among companies with 500-1,499 employees in Greater Washington. The awards recognize companies with policies and initiatives that promote the health and well-being of their employees.
"Greenspring truly deserves this honor," said Robin Gliboff, Greenspring's Executive Director. "The community offers a number of services and amenities that encourage employees to focus on their own health and wellness both at work and at home."
Some of the fundamental health and wellness options available to staff at Greenspring include a Wellness Committee, Employee Health and Wellness Center, and on-site fitness center. The Wellness Committee, assembled in 2011, is a cross-departmental committee that organizes activities and educational sessions for staff throughout the year such as walking challenges, self-defense courses, and special seminars focusing on men's and women's health. The committee routinely updates a community wellness website and provides a Weekly Wellness Focus with events and seminars that often correspond with national awareness campaigns such as Walk to Work Day, Men's Health Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Diabetes Awareness Month.
Greenspring's on-site Employee Health and Wellness Center allows employees to make same-day appointments, which reduces employee absences and time away from work for medical care. These appointments are free for most employees and include services such as sick care, well visits, referrals, lab work, and a Health IQ Check. The Health IQ Check, free for all employees, includes a 15-minute full cholesterol profile, diabetes screening, blood pressure check, body mass index calculation, vision screening, and weight measurement.
Additionally, staff at Greenspring have access to an online program called My Nutrition that provides detailed nutritional information for each meal item served daily at the community's restaurants; this service is a true benefit for those closely monitoring allergies and diets. Greenspring also offers discounted memberships to staff to the on-site fitness center, enrollment in CPR classes administered by trained American Heart Association staff, and access to a Wellness Fund that offers reimbursements for qualifying personal fitness expenses.
