(SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA) - Greenspring retirement community will be holding its fifth organized oral rehydration project on January 31. Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) is a method for treating dehydration often caused by illnesses such as cholera and rotavirus. The World Health Organization (WHO) and The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) consider ORT to be an increase in administered fluids and continued feeding. There are many locations in the world where people are suffering from dehydration and receive much needed support from projects like Oral Rehydration.
During past projects, Greenspring volunteers have been able to assemble between 7,500 and 10,000 oral rehydration kits of salt, baking soda, sugar, and salt substitute. With the assistance of the Universal Aide Society headquartered in British Columbia, Canada, after assembly at Greenspring, the kits will be sent to countries where dehydration is prevalent. For the project on January 31, the kits will likely be distributed to Sierra Leone, the Philippines, Liberia, the Honduras, or Cameroon.
Between 60 and 100 volunteers from Greenspring including residents and staff are expected to participate in the project on January 31.
