Kids at Inova Children's Hospital were the "Mane" Attraction during National Volunteer Week at Greenspring

April 9, 2014

(Springfield, Va.) - In honor of National Volunteer Week (April 6-12), resident volunteers at Greenspring retirement community attached personalized notes to plush lions for the oncology ward at Inova Children's Hospital.  Residents got to work on April 8 decorating notecards with handwritten messages and secured them to 200 lions for delivery to the children.
Also on April 8, a check for over $2.3 million was presented at Greenspring, which represented the monetary equivalent of nearly 103,000 hours of volunteer service reported by Greenspring volunteers in 2013.  "This check symbolizes the spirit of our culture at Greenspring," said Jean Landreville, Greenspring's Executive Director. "Our volunteers regularly reach out and make a difference in the lives of those they touch."
In November 2013, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors recognized the volunteer efforts at Greenspring, and in February 2014, the community presented 150 President's Volunteer Service Awards to Greenspring volunteers, for a total of 1,076 distributed in the community's history.  Currently, there are about 460 resident volunteers through Independent Living alone at the community.
