This year, the Fort Belvoir Color Guard will join the commemoration and our featured speaker is a resident at Greenspring, U.S. Army Retired Brigadier General Don Packard.  Don was a career Army officer, who graduated from West Point in 1948.  He served with a 1st Infantry Division in Germany from 1949-1952; afterwards, he returned to the U.S. to complete a master's degree in electrical engineering at Purdue University.  He served with the 1st Cavalry Division in Korea from 1959-1960 and was assigned as the Commander of the 2nd Battalion, 64th Armor, 3rd Infantry Division in Schweinfurt, Germany from 1965-1967.  In 1967, he served in Vietnam through the TET offensive in 1969 and subsequently served as a Brigade Commander at Fort Hood, Texas.  In 1974, he was assigned as the Commanding General at Fort Ord, California and retired from that position in 1978.
