Event sponsored by Daughters of World War II, Honor Flight DFW
DALLAS, TX---Sixty-seven years ago this weekend, the United States began its invasion of Iwo Jima, a critical strategic point in the Pacific during World War II.
Charged with capturing three airfields on the island, over 70,000 American service men participated in the mission. It is well-chronicled that some of the fiercest fighting during World War II occurred in the six weeks of the campaign between the U.S. and Japan.
Iwo Jima's Mount Suribachi was also the location of one of the iconic images in American history, Joe Rosenthal's "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima."
On Friday morning, February 17th, the Daughters of World War II and Honor Flight DFW will pay tribute to about twelve veterans who survived the Battle of Iwo Jima.
The breakfast will take place at Highland Springs, an Erickson Living retirement community in North Dallas. Two hundred guests, mostly World War II veterans, are anticipated.
Major General James "Jim" Williams, retired U.S. Marine from the 4th Division with service in Iraq and Afghanistan, will be the keynote speaker.
Additionally, Clyde Jackson, resident of Highland Springs and an Iwo Jima veteran, will be among those honored. Mr. Jackson stood next to photographer Joe Rosenthal on Mount Suribachi as he took the infamous image of the flag-raising.
Bob Knight, another Highland Springs resident and Iwo Jima resident, will also be honored.
