DALLAS, TX---With unseasonably cool temperatures, Old Man Winter has made unwelcome rounds in Dallas. However, he couldn't prevent residents and employees of Highland Springs retirement community from playing their golf rounds for a worthy cause.
Dodging the cold, the players enjoyed a beautiful May 1st day at Sherill Park Golf Course for its annual Golf Tournament & Creative Putting Contest to benefit the Student Scholarship Fund.
The fund provides collegiate scholarships to eligible Dallas-area high school students employed in the Dining Services Department of the Erickson Living retirement community.
The 2013 tournament featured a new twist. While thirty golfers hit the links at Sherrill Park for a nine-hole match, eight residents of Highland Springs competed at the community's green to test their putting strokes.
After the scores were tallied, the team of Eric Adolph, Jason Foss, Colton Payne and Luis Puertas won the golf tournament, the first time in the history of the event in which an all-employee team prevailed.
Highland Springs resident Dot Lovett earned top honors in the putting contest that featured a miniature golf-like design and a croquet mallet shot on the closing hole.
Ms. Lovett, a retired teacher, stated that "the event was delightful, and the putting green was very creative. Most importantly, supporting the scholarship fund is very important to residents. How better to improve a young adult's life than through education?"
All contestants returned to Highland Springs for post-round festivities, including lunch, awards presentation and much reliving of their best shots.
Barbara Blachly is the Community Resources Manager at Highland Springs. "It is quite rewarding to see residents, employees and friends of our community come together for a great cause. We believe deeply in the mission of the student scholar fund, and the golf tournament is a fun way to support it. Many thanks to the wonderful people at Sherrill Park for their hospitality."
The event raised over $400 for the Student Scholarship Fund. The Highland Springs scholarship ceremony is scheduled for June 15th.
