Retired Naval Leader Discusses Global Challenges

DALLAS, TX---With international tension heightening in the Pacific due to the nuclear ambitions of North Korea, residents of Highland Springs retirement community received a unique world view.
Admiral Patrick Walsh, U.S. Navy (retired) was a guest of the community's Government Affairs Group on February 18th.  His presentation, "Trends and Challenges in the Pacific," delved into the complex relationship between China, North Korea and Japan and delivered the case for a strong U.S. naval presence in the region.
Admiral Walsh retired from the armed forces in 2012 following consecutive assignments as the Vice Chief of Naval Operations and Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, the largest in the world, from 2007-2012.
The 1973 graduate of Jesuit College Preparatory School in Dallas attended the U.S. Naval Academy (Class of 1977).  His operational duties in the U.S. Navy included combat and flying with the Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels.
During his presentation, Admiral Walsh discussed how the U.S. Pacific Fleet plays a crucial role in military deterrence.  But he noted that it also serves a humanitarian purpose as he commanded Operation TOMODACHI in response to the earthquake, tsunami and radiological crisis in Japan.
For that mission, he received the "Grand Cordon---Order of the Rising Sun" from the Japanese government.
Following his remarks, the admiral took questions from residents on topics ranging from the pending federal budget sequestration to prospects for long-term stability in the region.
"International events are more intertwined than ever.  To have a leader of Admiral Walsh's stature share his perspective with us is a remarkable educational experience," noted Herb Hoxie, a resident member of the Government Affairs Group.  "Our residents are very interested in world affairs, which made his insight on the Pacific very compelling."
Admiral Walsh is currently the President of Strategic Programs and the Chairman of Academic Partnerships Foundation in Dallas.
