Team Highland Springs Captures Meaning of Walk to End Alzheimer's

DALLAS, TX---Participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer's is more than just an annual event for residents and employees of Highland Springs, the Erickson Living retirement community in North Dallas.
Since 2007, it's become a tradition filled with personal experiences, awareness and creativity.
Coordinated by Sara Bartolone, Wellness Manager, twenty members of Team Highland Springs brought family members and joined fellow walkers for the North Texas Chapter event in Allen at Celebration Park on September 28th.  The team raised $1,000 for the services and research provided by the Alzheimer's Association.
On the prior day, Highland Springs hosted a pre-Walk pep rally for residents in its independent and continuing care neighborhoods.  The event featured purple ice cream, music and a special cheer for the team.
"I am grateful for the wonderful contributions of Team Highland Springs this year," said Ms. Bartolone.  "It's a privilege to partner with the Alzheimer's Association.  From helping their staff sort and fold the trademark purple t-shirts to raising money, we know these efforts are supporting a worthy cause."
"And let's not forget the wellness benefits of the event itself," continued Ms. Bartolone.  "Physical activity does not have to be complicated.  A regular brisk walk can help people maintain a healthy weight, strengthen bones and manage certain health conditions."
One participant in the Walk was Jim Atkins, who serves as a caregiver for his wife Lonna.  The former Far North Dallas residents moved to Highland Springs in March, shortly after the community opened its new continuing care neighborhood that features memory care services.
"The Walk to End Alzheimer's is important because it raises awareness for those families who are impacted by it," stated Mr. Atkins.
"The Alzheimer's Association is such a wonderful organization in raising money for research and offering educational and training programs for caregivers," he described.  "Hopefully their efforts will someday lead to a world without Alzheimer's."
