Dr. Mary Norman Named Leader of the Year at Highland Springs

Dallas, Texas—Highland Springs, the Erickson Living retirement community, named Dr. Mary Norman, MD, as its Leader of the Year for 2016.

The recognition is given to a manager or director who continually demonstrates exceptional leadership qualities and inspires, motivates and empowers his or her team members to commit to excellence in serving residents.

Dr. Norman, the Medical Director at Highland Springs, was one of 22 employees selected by their respective communities or corporate departments and recognized nationally among her peers during the Erickson Living Annual Meeting held in Baltimore on March 6.

A resident of Plano, Dr. Norman is a 1989 graduate of Southern Methodist University with degrees in economics and finance.  Following a brief career in corporate lending with NCNB (now Bank of America), she began her vocation in medicine.   She graduated from University of California, San Francisco with an MD in 1997 and completed her internship and residency in internal medicine as well as a fellowship in geriatric medicine there.

A 9-time recipient of the “Top Doc” recognition by D Magazine, Dr. Norman joined Highland Springs in 2007.  “I have loved serving as Medical Director for nearly ten years and enjoy the daily interaction with our residents and fellow employees,” she stated.  “There is no place that provides all the tools we have to deliver outstanding medical care and, even more importantly, an outstanding life.”

“Specifically, I am very proud of our team who provide outstanding service in the on-site medical center.  94 percent of residents use our services for their medical care or Carepath program.  They have access to not only same-day appointments but also an integrated approach to meeting their specific health and wellness goals,” noted Dr. Norman.  Her partnerships with area agencies have created a robust educational series such as Age Well, Live Well and Being Mortal for residents and their loved ones.

Matt Neville, Executive Director of Highland Springs, noted that Dr. Norman strikes the right balance in the clinical duties, team-building and relational aspects of her leadership position.

“As our Medical Director, Dr. Mary ensures that residents are receiving quality care so they can lead a vibrant and healthy lifestyle,” stated Mr. Neville.  “She is an integral part of our community’s success, and her positive impact is demonstrated in our resident satisfaction results.”

“In preparing Dr. Mary’s nomination, we found no shortage of residents, co-workers and family members who wanted to sing her praises,” said Mr. Neville.  “Dr. Mary consistently partners with our entire clinical operations team.  She is a master communicator, coordinating services across the spectrum of continuing care, rehabilitation, social work, home support and even security to ensure the needs of residents are met.  If she is aware of a critical issue, Dr. Mary addresses the challenge quickly and responsibly.  She embodies our mission and the Erickson Way.”
