Dr. Mary Norman of Highland Springs Co-Chairs National Panel for Women Health Professionals in Geriatrics

Dallas, Texas—Dr. Mary Norman, M.D., Medical Director at Highland Springs retirement community, co-chaired a panel discussion on the issues facing female health professionals in the geriatrics field.

The meeting of the new Women in Geriatrics Special Interest Group was part of the American Geriatrics Society 2017 Annual Scientific Meeting held May 17-20 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The forum, co-sponsored by the Erickson Health Medical Group and the Visiting Nurses Association, provided participants the opportunity to discuss challenges and share ideas related to professional and personal work-life balance.  The group is co-chaired by Rebecca S. Boxer, M.D., M.S.

“A medical career in geriatrics is rewarding as we serve older Americans and help them achieve their health and wellness goals,” stated Dr. Norman, who oversees the medical center at the Erickson Living retirement community located in North Dallas.  “Like women in all professions, we strive to create balance between our professional responsibilities and our family lives.”

“That is why this inaugural meeting was so valuable.  We were able to share personal stories such as sharing home duties with a spouse who works and caring for children and aging parents.  In the end, we laid the groundwork for on-going partnerships, mentoring programs and information exchange regarding best medical practices in the field,” said Dr. Norman.

Dr. Susan Parks, Director of the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Palliative Care at Jefferson University in Philadelphia also spoke regarding careers in academic medicine.
