Maris Grove Celebrates Five Years of Serving Seniors

September 26, 2011

One of Delaware County's Premier Active Adult Communities Continues its Mission of Providing Quality Care for Older Adults in a Vibrant Setting

GLEN MILLS, PA - More than five years ago, nearly 90 acres of land off of Route 322 in Glen Mills, near Route One, was nothing more than woods and fields.  Then the Maris Grove community emerged from this parcel of land and aspired to be a community where older adults could lead an active and engaging lifestyle under one roof with a small town feel in Delaware County.
Maris Grove quickly assimilated into the township and its residents became strong proponents of volunteerism, education and would become an important part of the region's economic engine.
On October 2, 2011, Maris Grove celebrates its fifth anniversary, and the community has accomplished a great deal within the past five years.
From the time that Maris Grove residents first turned the key to open the door to their new life at the independent active adult community, to the present, more than 1,300 residents moved in, currently enjoy their lives, thrive and contribute to the region.
"I was thrilled to move in and now love every minute of living here," said Maryann Starkey, who came to Maris Grove the day before the grand opening celebration. "The first few days and months were such an exciting time here at the community.  There were always new neighbors moving in, and we had the chance to meet them which was wonderful.  I now participate in a wide-range of activities and just love my garden!"
Maris Grove also has a positive impact on the local and regional community by generating jobs and revenue within the local shops and stores.  Since the community opened in 2006, the community created 241 full-time positions and 193 part-time jobs. In addition, Maris Grove employs 233 students from local schools who work in the community's restaurants.
The student employees are also eligible for the Maris Grove Student Scholars' Fund, which provides them with funding for their secondary college or trade school education.  In 2011, $104,000 was raised by residents to pay for their schooling and year to date, approximately $300,000 has gone towards their continuing education.
The community has two large clubhouses featuring an on-site medical center, staffed by full-time doctors, two exquisite restaurants, a café and bistro, a convenience store, beauty parlor, fitness center, a swimming pool, activity rooms, classrooms, game rooms and even a bank branch.
Residents also have the opportunity to take part in 174 different active clubs, generating 500 different activities per month.  The community also has its own Interfaith Chapel on campus that serves as the physical foundation for a strong faith-based community.
"Maris Grove is a place that promotes an active and healthy lifestyle for its residents and helps them live life to the fullest," said Maureen Heckler, executive director.  "For five years this community has made a difference in the lives of residents and staff, and as we enter the next five, and beyond, we will continue our mission to improve the lives of more and more residents who are the true foundation of this wonderful place."
Renaissance Gardens at Maris Grove is the extended care neighborhood's personal care, skilled nursing and sub-acute rehabilitation home for 132 residents.  This top-notch quality personal care provides residents with an impressive staff-to-resident ratio that translates into more personalized attention for each resident in a small, homelike setting.
Renaissance Gardens at Maris Grove offers all private Personal Care, Long-Term Nursing Care, and Skilled Nursing/Rehabilitation rooms.  The community has a full service inpatient rehabilitation program and three floors in total. Respite care is also available.
Mrs. Starkey, who is a former elementary school teacher in the Downingtown School District, still volunteers her time helping children in school once a week.  She also works with children at the nearby Concord Elementary School.  She is one of many residents who volunteers her time helping outside causes, organizations and groups.
In 2011, to date, 14,940 volunteer hours were logged by Maris Grove residents.  And in 2010, a total of 18,795 hours were spent helping out various community organizations.
State Senator Dominic Pileggi said, "Over the past five years, the Maris Grove community has proved to be a dramatically positive addition to western Delaware County.  The willingness of the talented residents of this growing community to actively participate in civic activities of all sorts has had an immeasurable positive impact."
Since Maris Grove opened in 2006, residents and staff have volunteered their time and donated funds to a variety of organizations.  Some of which include:
