Annual Event Helps Collect Van Loads of Food for St. Katherine's Church
GLEN MILLS, PA - As the leaves begin to fall and people turn their attention to the holidays, one more thought comes to mind for many - the spirit of giving. That's what some residents and staff members of the Maris Grove retirement community did by collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items for the needy.
The food collection, which totaled one half-ton, benefits local families in need through St. Katherine Drexel Church in Chester. This marks the fifth year that Maris Grove has participated in this food drive to assist benevolent organizations within Delaware County.
Maris Grove collected approximately three van loads of food, which was loaded up by residents and with the assistance of the Garnet Valley High School Wrestling Team. This intergenerational collaboration has been a partnership that has taken place since the inception of the food drive.
The event began with a march around campus, led by a giant six-foot tall turkey. Really! Well, the turkey was played by Maris Grove Wellness Manager John O'Donnell who paraded around the community with residents in tow in an effort to promote exercise and fitness.
"In addition to answering a call for help, the turkey trot is an important event at Maris Grove because it serves as an activity that contributes to the health and wellbeing of our residents by allowing them to be active participants, and get exercise in a fun and unique way," O'Donnell said.
"This annual event helps a very worthwhile house of worship fulfill a need that assists those in the county who are struggling," Maris Grove Executive Director Maureen Heckler said. "It is during the holidays that people usually tend to think about those in need a little bit more, but our residents and staff pride themselves on helping the community throughout the year, and gain tremendous satisfaction from ongoing efforts like the turkey trot."
Maris Grove Wellness Coordinator Jennifer Moser said, "An event like the annual turkey trot is a perfect way for the residents and staff from Maris Grove to share their gifts with the outside community and help make a holiday brighter for a family in need."
