Artist turned author

Acclaimed sculptor Douglas McIlvain recently published his first book, Bound Secret, a compilation of his career as an artist and teacher. The volume contains 250 photographs illustrating his work in wood, stone, bronze and experimental materials.

"I decided to write this book for several reasons," Douglas explains, "to pass on knowledge to future students and teachers, to pass on information about my life and sculptures to my children and to answer many of the questions from residents here at Seabrook about my sculptures and how they were made."

Not only did his Seabrook neighbors inspire him to write his book—some of them even helped him with proofing and editing.

Bound Secret is dedicated to Douglas's wife, a fellow artist and teacher. He's already thinking about a second book.
