Oak Crest’s Signature Dining Creates Restaurant Experience, Unleashes Culinary Career Opportunities

Parkville, Maryland-- As she stir fries a Thai scallop and shrimp dish over a bright, searing flame, Jeanna Deugwillo says with a smile, “Serving our residents is the best part of my job. That is what it’s all about.”

Jeanna is a Line Cook at Oak Crest, the Erickson Living retirement community in Parkville. While attending nearby Perry Hall High School twelve years ago, she began working as a student server in one of the five restaurants located at the 87-acre campus. She was even awarded a collegiate scholarship through the resident-supported Student Scholars’ Fund.

Oak Crest Celebrates 2017 National Nurses Week

Parkville, Maryland-- For residents of Oak Crest, the nurses of the Erickson Living retirement community provide comfort, compassionate medical care when needed and daily encouragement to achieve health and wellness goals.

That’s why Oak Crest celebrates National Nurses Week throughout May 6-12. This year’s theme, created by the American Nurses Association, is “Nursing: The Balance of Mind, Body and Spirit.”

Oak Crest employs 54 RNs and 49 LPNs. They serve a variety of roles in the community’s continuing care neighborhoods, providing direct care, specialized assessments, educational training, quality assurance, safety skills, managerial leadership and administrative support....

Oak Crest Residents “Spring Into Action!”

Parkville, Maryland— Oak Crest volunteers are always eager to “Spring Into Action!” Their dedication and spirit were celebrated at the Volunteer Appreciation Brunch on April 26 in Erickson Hall.

More than 300 resident volunteers attended the event, enjoying a delicious meal prepared by the Oak Crest Catering Department. They were entertained by the Helping Up Mission’s Men Choir who provided a lively musical interlude.

Oak Crest Awards Collegiate Scholarships to 31 Employees

Parkville, Maryland-- Oak Crest announced the 31-member Student Scholars Class of 2017 at its 21st Annual Award Ceremony on March 29. The recipients, all members of the Dining Services Department, earned four-year collegiate scholarships in the amount of $5,000.

In 21 years, $2.85 million has been awarded to assist 768 students to advance their collegiate careers, according to Stacey Schiano, Philanthropy Manager for the Erickson Living retirement community, during her campaign report. More than $165,000 was raised during the 2017 campaign, funded primarily through resident contributions.

Shared Experience Unites Resident, Employee of Oak Crest

Parkville, Maryland— In some cases, decades separate their ages, but shared experiences provide the foundation for strong bonds between residents and employees of Oak Crest.

Take Brittany Woodard, a Sales Associate at the Erickson Living retirement community. When not working at Oak Crest, she serves her country as an Airman First Class in the United States Air Force Reserves. Since enlisting in January, 2016, Brittany continues to train with a goal of a promotion in sight. Her interest in the military began in high school when she entered the JROTC.

Oak Crest Appoints Kevin Goedeke as Associate Executive Director

Parkville, Maryland— Oak Crest retirement community appointed Kevin Goedeke to serve as Associate Executive Director.

Previously, Mr. Goedeke spent seven years as an Administrator and Executive Administrator with Mid-Atlantic Healthcare, LLC where he supported and operated skilled nursing facilities within its portfolio. In 2016, he founded Lighthouse Care Updates, a software company that provides communication and family experience solutions to senior care providers.

In his leadership position as Associate Executive Director, Mr. Goedeke will focus on strategic planning and development of the 87-acre campus that is home to more than 2,100 residents in independent living, assisted living...

Oak Crest Employees Go Above and Beyond During Winter Storm Stella

Parkville, Maryland-- Winter Storm Stella has come and gone! While she didn’t bring us a full-fledged blizzard, the mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and wind made for a nasty late-winter storm.

The employees of Oak Crest didn’t let Stella stand in the way of taking care of 2,100 residents who depend on them. More than 90 employees stayed overnight Monday…and countless others made their way in on Tuesday…to make sure sidewalks were cleared, meals were served, medical care was provided and services ran smoothly.

Parkville, Maryland-- To commemorate Black History Month, Oak Crest residents and employees attended a special event showcasing the courage of African-Americans in the Underground Railroad movement. Through song, dance and music, Janice Curtis Greene, accompanied by performers David Fakunle, Deborah Pierce-Fakunle and Cheryl Hinton, told the story of Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist and brave leader of the Underground Railroad who helped hundreds of men and women escape the bonds of slavery in the 19th century.

Oak Crest Couple Celebrates 70 Years Together on Valentine's Day

It was the last day of school at Hamilton Junior High, and young Jack Orth saw a beautiful girl named Mary across the street at a confectionery store. He told his buddies, “I’m going to marry that girl someday.”

He finally got the nerve to ask her out, and their first date was two months later in August. That night, Jack told Mary, “I’m going to marry you someday.” Without hesitation, Mary replied, “You’re out of your mind!”
