Happy National Social Work Month to our team at Oak Crest!

This year's theme is “Stand Up.” Social workers stand up for millions of people each day. Nationally, they stand up by comforting people who are experiencing devastating illnesses and mental health crises, ensuring they get the best care while on the road to recovery. They stand up and support our brave military personnel, veterans and their families. They work in communities and with national, state and local government to provide services and pass legislation to stand with and help the most vulnerable.

Oak Crest Commemorates Black History Month With Story-Telling Event

Parkville, Maryland-- To commemorate Black History Month, Oak Crest residents and employees attended a special event showcasing the courage of African-Americans in the Underground Railroad movement. Through song, dance and music, Janice Curtis Greene, accompanied by performers David Fakunle, Deborah Pierce-Fakunle and Cheryl Hinton, told the story of Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist and brave leader of the Underground Railroad who helped hundreds of men and women escape the bonds of slavery in the 19th century.

Oak Crest Couple Celebrates 70 Years Together on Valentine's Day

It was the last day of school at Hamilton Junior High, and young Jack Orth saw a beautiful girl named Mary across the street at a confectionery store. He told his buddies, “I’m going to marry that girl someday.”

He finally got the nerve to ask her out, and their first date was two months later in August. That night, Jack told Mary, “I’m going to marry you someday.” Without hesitation, Mary replied, “You’re out of your mind!”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Celebrated at Oak Crest

Parkville, Maryland— Oak Crest, the Erickson Living retirement community, honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with an intergenerational tribute luncheon on January 23.

More than 175 residents, employees and guests attended the annual event, sponsored by the Diversity and Inclusion Council. Mark Roussey, Executive Director, provided the opening remarks.

Mysteries Revealed During Oak Crest’s Appraisal Event

Parkville, Maryland— Residents of Oak Crest retirement community lived out their version of a captivating, page-turning mystery novel on January 12.

Placed in carefully protected boxes or large carts, they brought their small furniture, porcelain pieces, miniatures, collectibles, coins, toys, books, paintings, prints, jewelry and antique weaponry to be appraised by a team of local professionals.

It was all to answer one question.

“Is it a valuable treasure or just a nice keepsake?” said Mrs. Virginia Patterson, a resident of Oak Crest whose love of the PBS program Antiques Roadshow inspired the program.

Baskets Bring Cheer to Oak Crest Employee Teams

Parkville, Maryland— There are baskets of cheer, and then there are baskets that bring cheer!

On January 4, the Leadership Team of Oak Crest acted on the latter as it filled, decorated and then distributed 63 baskets filled with goodies and winter time essentials to employee teams throughout its independent living and extended care neighborhoods. The baskets included stress balls, flash lights, ice scrapers, lip balm, eye cloths, snacks and candy.

Parkville, Maryland— “Home for the Holidays” conjures memories of cherished times spent with family and friends. But it can be a reminder about those currently serving the United States abroad in the armed forces.

Since June, 2014, residents and employees of Oak Crest know Julian Brooks as a valued Wait Staff team member in the Catering Department and the son of Julie Wheeler, Senior Recruiter in the Human Resources Department.
