Katherine Rigney Has Duckpin Fever!

PARKVILLE, MD---"May duckpin bowling stay forever in Baltimore!"
For Katherine Rigney, it's gone beyond an expression to a true life's passion.
Ms. Rigney, a resident of Oak Crest retirement community, is a founding member and long-serving officer of the Anneslie Bowling League.  When the bowlers resume action this September, it will mark the group's 56th anniversary
Established by three neighbors in Anneslie, the Towson-based league is still rolling strong, bowling every Tuesday morning during its eight-month season.  Originally housed at Stoneleigh Lanes, the group moved twice before finding a home at its current location, AMF Towson Lanes near Providence Road.
The only member of her original team, the Cherokees, still active in the league, Ms. Rigney states that the driving force behind the group has been socialization, not strikes.  "At each of our year-end parties and anniversary luncheons, you'll hear good-natured stories about matches.  Mainly, though, it's a celebration of long-standing friendships and a bright future," noted Ms. Rigney.
The addition of twelve new bowlers in September will grow the league to twenty-eight.
An Anniversary Committee has collected completed scorebooks, transparent bowling sheets, championship trophies and an original league roster.  But Ms. Rigney always manages to look forward to the competition.  She even practices at Oak Crest as a Wii Bowling champion.
"My team, the Cherokees, won the championship the first three years and again the last two years, but everyone in the league is so talented.  Our averages range from 72 to 102, so I'd say that's some pretty good bowling," described Ms. Rigney.
Although its origins are subject to debate, no one doubts the long-standing popularity of duckpin bowling in Baltimore.  "I grew up bowling in Danville, Virginia, but have made lifelong friends in the Baltimore area," stated Ms. Rigney.  "Duckpin bowling is great exercise for people of all ages.  I just love it!"
