Lifted by Song and the Power of Dreams, Oak Crest Commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

January 22, 2014

PARKVILLE, MD---Mother Nature and her snow could not chill the power of dreams and song that filled the campus of Oak Crest retirement community.
Over 120 residents, employees and special guests attended a breakfast on January 22nd to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  The event began with the reciting of the "I Have a Dream" speech by Dr. Lloyd Bowser of the Oak Crest Medical Center.
Mark Roussey, the associate executive director of Oak Crest, stated that "the fact that Dr. King was willing to lose his life for the cause of civil rights has touched so many yesterday and today and will continue to do so tomorrow.  A faith so high brought his fear so low.  We are inspired by his faith, and that is why we celebrate him today."
Oak Crest was honored to have Maryland Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown in attendance.  The Lieutenant Governor provided remarks on Dr. King's belief in community service.
Following breakfast, Oak Crest resident Marjorie Green introduced civil rights activist Rev. Cortly C.D. Witherspoon, Sr., the keynote speaker.  Rev. Witherspoon serves as Assistant Pastor of Faith Church in Baltimore and President of the Greater Baltimore Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.  He spoke of the power of Dr. King's dream and how Americans must strive to advance the cause of civil rights and equality.
Soloist Devonna B. Rowe, who holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in vocal performance from Catholic University of America, performed two songs.  Because of school cancellations, the Friends of the Baltimore City College Choir could not participate, but will be invited for a future performance.
