PARKVILLE, MD--It's been said that service to others is the rent you pay for living on this planet.
Audrey Brodbeck, a resident of Oak Crest retirement community, leads by example.
The graduate of the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago has devoted her life to Christian ministry, focusing her efforts with children. She has worked with the Child Evangelism Fellowship in both Pennsylvania and Maryland.
"I love the ministry of sharing God's gift and bringing joy to those less fortunate," described Ms. Brodbeck.
During the 2012 holiday season, Ms. Brodbeck lent her time and talent to Operation Christmas Child, an annual project of Samaritan's Purse International Relief.
Starting in July, she shopped for backpacks, school supplies, hygiene items, small toys and t-shirts to fill twenty blue containers for distribution to children in need around the world.
But she surpassed her goal, preparing 34 kits for Operation Christmas Child. The containers, donated by Oak Crest, were delivered to the Nottingham location of Chick-fil-A, where they were shipped to a North Carolina distribution center via Grace Fellowship Church in Timonium.
"I am very confident in the leadership of Samaritan's Purse," noted Ms. Brodbeck. "Since 1993, more than 100 million children in 130 countries have been served by the organization. They are true to their mission."
Her work inspired other employees at Oak Crest to participate. Cindy Rodriguez, a Clinical Manager, selected Operation Christmas Child as the Day of Giving project for the Home Health team.
"We set out to fill six containers, but received so many donated items, that we made it to sixteen," said Ms. Rodriguez. "Instead of giving gifts to each other, this was a fun way for us to assist those in need during the holidays."
