Multicultural Expo Transforms Oak Crest into the “World In Miniature”

Parkville, Maryland--On Friday, July 15, Oak Crest transformed its scenic 87-acre campus into a “World in Miniature” during its 4th Annual Multicultural Expo.

With interactive displays that served as “mini-classrooms,” exhibitors showcased their cultures through demonstrations, international cuisine, artifacts, religious symbols, pictures and clothing from residents and employees of the Erickson Living retirement community.  Countries represented included Austria, Germany, Greece, Scotland, Holland, Kenya, Cameroon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Additionally, the 300 residents and employees in attendance enjoyed food stations serving delicious Pacific Rim-Asian, Italian and “Southern Hospitality” cuisine prepared by the Dining Services Department of Oak Crest.

The event was sponsored by the Oak Crest Diversity and Inclusion Council chaired by Dante Taylor, an Assistant Manager with Dining Services.

The charter of the Council is “to create awareness and understanding through learning and to celebrate our diversity of culture, ethnicity, race, age, physical abilities, gender, sexual identity, religion and mindset of staff and residents.”

The Council will uphold the mission by achieving the following goals:

1.    Connecting with resident groups and clubs to enhance sharing and celebrating our differences.
2.    Working as a team, composed of staff, residents and corporate partners, to establish appropriate goals and communications.
3.    Identifying, addressing and minimizing any gaps in our celebration of diversity and inclusion of residents and staff.
4.    Providing effective communication through Oak Crest to maximize awareness with events and activities.
