Oak Crest Launches Its Official Facebook Page

Parkville, Maryland--For Barbara Zorn, checking Facebook has become part of her routine.

“Facebook allows me to connect with my daughters, granddaughters and extended family members as far away as Texas.  I see their photos, and we trade messages,” said Ms. Zorn, a resident of Oak Crest retirement community since 2010.

Of course, Ms. Zorn enjoys spending time with her family.  But she understands that their lives are busy.  And so is hers.  She serves as the resident member of the Oak Crest Board of Directors, Inc. and teaches classes for the iPad Users Group, a resident activity she co-founded.

The convenience and ease of the social media site makes it ideal for people of all ages, she noted.

“It’s even a search tool that I can access from my iPad or iPhone,” stated Ms. Zorn, who served as the Executive Director for the Maryland Association of CPAs before retirement.  “I also believe that seniors should stay knowledgeable about today’s technology.  Using Facebook is one way to do that.”

Ms. Zorn is one of a growing number of residents of the Erickson Living retirement community who use social media for receiving news and keeping up with family and friends.  It is a big reason why Oak Crest launched a new Facebook page in December, https://www.facebook.com/OakCrestCommunity.

“Our residents and customers are more tech-savvy than ever,” stated Jim Antonakos, Director of Sales.  “The Facebook page will be an outlet to share news about Oak Crest, provide information about events open to the public, and tell the interesting stories about the people who live and work at our community.”

Oak Crest already caters to the tech-set.  Throughout its 87-acre campus, each building—including every resident apartment--is connected to Wi Fi.  In addition to the iPad Users Group, a Computer Group offers resident-led beginners and intermediate classes on computing and related applications.

“We certainly live in a digital age in which information is readily available at our fingertips,” said Mr. Antonakos.  “Many of our future residents and their families research senior living options on the internet.  Our Facebook page will be another resource for them.”
